This Friday marks the celebration of our precious planet, Earth.
The day dedicated to mother earth started on April, 22, 1970 and is credited as launching the modern environmental movement. We can thank it partly for the passage of the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act that followed shortly after.
Since its inception, Earth Day has enlisted the help of 192 countries and now billions of people participate in Earth Day activities each year making it the largest civil observance in the world.
The main goal of Earth Day is to broaden, diversify and mobilize the environmental movement, Earth Day Network does this through advocacy, education, public policy, and consumer campaigns each year.
This year, Earth Day Network has chosen A Billion Acts of Green as the theme for Earth Day 2011. At over 40 million actions to date, it has become the largest environmental campaign in the world with the goal is to register one billion actions before the global Earth Summit in Rio in 2012.
Just this week, Earth Day Network announced a collaboration with Facebook to further engage people worldwide in environmental action through the Billion Acts of Green®campaign.  The two organizations worked together to create a new application that’s inspiring people around the world to take actions to reduce their impact on the environment. The app can be found at http://apps.facebook.com/billionactsofgreen.
This week you can also celebrate by watching a film dedicated to Earth Day. One film worth watching is “Saving Pelican 895.” The Saving Pelican 896 Video Documentary can be found HERE
